Need to Relax? Take a Deep Breath (or several) Meditation When I’m feeling tense and frustrated, the last thing I want to hear from anyone are these four words: “You need to relax!”  Aside from reminding me that I am A. tense, and B. frustrated, telling me to relax isn’t going to make it happen. I’m simply not equipped with a voice activated switch that toggles between UPTIGHT and CHILL.   The process of deciding to relax and actually feeling relaxed just doesn’t happen that quickly. Yet there are techniques that can help speed up the process.  Many of them involve making conscious changes to your breathing (I can thank my yoga teacher for this bit of insight). For fun, I searched “breathing exercises” online and found dozens. Apparently, I’m not the only one out there needing to relax.  If you want to know whether you need to chill, just tune in to HOW you breathe.    If you’re tense, you’ll tend to take more rapid, shallow breaths, which increases heart rates and muscle tension

Tips & Tricks On Maintaining Your Spa Frog Hot Tub Be sure to check your owners manual for the gallon-age of your hot tub. Filling the hot tub. When filling the spa, it is recommended that you add water with the garden hose through the filter compartment.  It is also recommended that you use hard (not softened) water.  It is also important to not use hot     water to fill the spa as you can drain your water heater and sometimes add rust to the spa. When adding chemicals it is important to add all chemicals through the filter compartment with the jets running. This will insure all the chemicals will get fully dissolved before entering the main spa water, and not cause any damage to the spa shell. Spa Frog Maintenance Open the mineral and bromine cartridge and place into spa frog compartment. Start with both cartridges on 6 if spa is over 300 gallons. Once you get a good bromine reading turn the Spa Frog down to 4.   Mark the date 3 weeks from now on the next bromine cart

How Can I Burn More Calories in the same amount of time? You’ll be surprised at how easy it is to burn more calories. Just walk faster. A 2006 study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine shows that walkers in their fifties burned 25% more calories when they increased their walking speed a mere half mile per hour from 3.6 mph to 4.1 mph ( as reported in More Magazine (Michelle Stanten ). The number of calories burned increases dramatically with just small increases in speed. Add another half mile per hour from 4.1 to 4.6 and the effect burns 32 percent more calories. The critical pace to reach and exceed is 4 mph, according to Mark Fenton, walking guru and former Olympic speed walker. For every tenth you add beyond 4 mph, the caloric burn advantage begins to cascade. Exceed 5 mph, you burn more calories than if you were running. That’s because running leaves you temporarily airborne, creating a pause in energy output, and your landing provides a spring for the next step. Fast

Walking has been shown to offer significant health benefits . It’s also an exercise with the lowest dropout rate. So once you get started, you’ll be less likely to stop. How Much Should I Walk? The magic number is 10,000 steps, which equates to about five miles. You’ll see the number as a daily target goal in the recommendations of nearly any reputable health organization. Surprisingly, the 10,000 steps idea wasn’t originally based on scientific evidence but was started as part of a slogan by a Japanese pedometer company. Since then, research has confirmed that 10,000 steps is indeed a milestone number that provides great health benefits. Do I Have To Hit 10,000 Each Day? Of course not. 10,000 steps is a nice, round number. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that adults engage in 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, such as brisk walking. To meet that recommendation, you would only need to walk about 7,000 to 8,000 steps a day. The average A

Do I really need a cover lifter?Yes. Absolutely, yes....

Do I really need a cover lifter? Yes. Absolutely, yes. Unequivocally, yes. It’s not about strength or mere convenience. It’s about protecting your cover, your hot tub and your back. How Do They Work? Generally a cover lifter has a bar that rests against the fold in the cover. After unclipping the child safety locks from the front of the cover, you simply fold it back over that bar. Then, as you fold back one more time, the cover is mechanically brought back, off the hot tub surface and held in place. It’s easy to do by yourself in seconds. The only negative is that most lifters disrupt the attractive, clean lines of a spa and the look of a smooth flat cover. That’s why Caldera Spas integrates the lifter bar inside the cover. The integrated bar helps complement the spa’s design, resulting in a much cleaner look and a more attractive design aesthetic. What If I Don’t Have A Cover Lifter? Without a cover lifter, you’d fold the cover back and then slide it off the hot tub. Cover s

Will 20 Minutes In My Spa Really Matter? We truly believe it...

Will 20 Minutes In My Spa Really Matter?  We truly believe it will. At Caldera Spas, we believe it because we live it, and 20-minute renewal is part of our daily lives. From personal experience, we believe that 20-minutes a day can help you release tension, relax muscles and let go of all the clutter in your head. Science seems to concur. Recently, studies have emerged on the effects of spa use—also called warm water immersion—particularly in 20-minute intervals. Two researchers— Dr. Bruce Becker of Washington State University and Dr. Doreen Stiskal of Seton Hall University—have focused studies around 20-minute sessions. According to Dr. Stiskal, “the body gains the maximum benefit of warm water therapy within 20 minutes.“ Dr. Becker has conducted many studies, all focusing on immersion of 20 - 24 minutes with a temperature range of 94°– 102°. His observations include the following: • The buoyancy of the water relieves gravity and takes pressure off joints, providing relief to

Try A Bright (Yellow) Way To Help Ease Joint Pain: Turmeric  Joint pain??  Add spice. If you were to ask me if I have arthritis, I’d answer “no.” Which is an odd response, because I have an achy hip that will one day need to be replaced. Among the problems with it, says my doctor, are bone spurs and some arthritis. Obviously, I’m in denial. Regardless, the danged thing hurts and I can’t take anti-inflammatory medicines. After looking around, I’ve discovered several natural alternatives that help with inflammation and pain, including black cherry juice, and another that looks so promising, I plan to try it soon: turmeric. Yes, the bright yellow spice that’s used in Indian curries and South Asian cooking. It’s also the component that gives yellow mustard its bright color. What’s really interesting about the spice, however, is that anti-inflammation effect. According to a 2009 study, the active ingredient in turmeric (curcumin) was found to ease pain as well as ibuprofen. And research
